"but due to my recent "challenges" regarding updates and subsequent SAFE MODE startups I'm leary of almost anything" imo, you are doing the right thing, kirk. do not exceed your comfort level with downloads and installs, and if you are experiencing a persistent problem or two, that is not the time to be tacking on extra software. if you get too much new stuff happening at once, the troubleshooting process really bogs down, and it becomes increasingly easy to head off in the wrong direction in search of a remedy. keep it pared down until you get it dialed in. then add one thing at a time. imho, of course. :)
