It's the moon's closeness to the Earth that causes certain natural cycles. The gravitational effects cause movement of the fluids in the brain (effectively a cerebral tide), and these can send people a bit loopy. It is a phenomenon noticed frequently in alzheimers patients.

Werewolf stories and astrological BS comes from the misinterpretation of sensibly explained events. But the BS version of events is more appealing to the storyteller, and thus is more well "known". It's quite possible that during full moons, people get more nervous and sell stocks. Or maybe lately they have just gone mad and bought Nasdaq stocks! <g>
