Nokia Chairman Sees Rise In Global Handset Market In 2003-
FT Sunday November 17, 6:22 pm ET
NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Nokia Corp. chairman and chief executive Jorma Olilla predicted an increase in global handset sales in 2003 despite pessimism about the outlook for the U.S. and European economies, The Financial Times reported on its Web site Sunday.
Olilla said in an interview that the increase would be driven by the growth in new subscribers in markets such as the U.S., China, India, Russia and eastern Europe, the report said.
Olilla saw the number of mobile phone users at 1.5 billion by 2005, up from 1 billion at present, according to the report, and he said there was a good chance the handset market will grow in volume by 10% to 15% a year for the next three years. He said sales would also be bolstered by replacement demand in more mature markets such as Europe, where the arrival of colored screens, picture messaging and games was encouraging consumers to upgrade.

Telecom stocks rode higher in Europe after Nokia (NOK: news, chart, profile) CEO Jorma Ollila said in an interview with the Financial Times that there is "good chance" the handset market volumes will grow 10-15 percent a year over the next three years.
Vodafone Group (VOD: news, chart, profile), the world's largest mobile network operator, rose 2.6 percent in London. Nokia was up close to 2 percent in Finland. Still Ollila declined to comment on a specific estimate for industry handset sales next year; the handset maker is expecting 400 million units sold this year.
In a separate report, JP Morgan Securities in London said Nokia's market share appears to have declined by close to 3 percentage points in China in October to 22 percent vs. the third quarter and that rival Motorola (MOT: news, chart, profile) is estimated to have had a 25 percent share in October.
