re: Nokia 6200 EDGE Tri-Mode

Chaz,

<< 6200 not yet FCC approved. Why? >>

Because FCC approval takes time, just like type approval in Europe and Japan take time.

One might ask why isn't the newly released Samsung SGH-Z100 3G UMTS mobile phone which is presumably based on Qualcomm's MSM6200 (SAMPLE) type approved yet?

The Nokia 6650 dual-mode GSM/3GSM phone not only has complete photos and specs firmly published, has been demo'd publicly, and is currently in precommercial trials on live networks and in vendors IOT labs ...

... but it also type approved in both Europe and Japan:

The Nokia 6650 WCDMA/GSM phone passes type approval tests in Europe and Japan
10-16-2002

10-16-2002: Shipments for operators to commence immediately: Nokia has today announced that it has passed all regulatory WCDMA and GSM type approval tests for the Nokia 6650 WCDMA/GSM dual mode mobile phone conforming to the requirements of European Union CE mark under the R&TTE directive. The Nokia 6650 has also received the type approval certificate from Japan concerning regulatory requirements tested by local official test authority TELEC. Passed type approval tests mean that the shipments can now begin to operators.

<< the seeming lack of interest outside the US carriers >>

Evidently you haven't been paying much attention to what is happening in the real world. Europe's still quiet. Asia and Pac Rim is not.

<< who are stuck with the laughing called TDMA "upgrade" [sic.]. >>

Yes. IMJ is laughing in between tears, I'm afraid, while taking every public swipe at it he possibly can in his own inimitable style, now that it is too late for AWS, Cingular. Dobson, VoiceStream Canada's Rogers AT&T, Mexico's Telecel, TIM in LA, Argentina's Telecom Personal, Bermuda's BTC Mobility, Bahrain's Batelco, Australia's Singtel Optus, Thailand's TAC et al, to flip his way despite the FUD pieces out of CDG.

Telstra of Australia will be a bitter loss if they flip since they were supposedly a prime candidate for GSM1x.

Same with the carriers in the Asian gateways of Singapore and Hong Kong.

<< Perhaps there will actually be a EDGE handset from Nokia. >>

Yes. and handsets and terminals from Motorola, Novatel, Samsung, Siemens, Sierra Wireless and Sony Ericsson following in reasonably short order..

There sure will not be a shortage of EDGE terminals by the end of 2003

Take it to the bank.

Whether or not ALL Nokia GSM/3GSM handsets will deliver with EDGE by end of 2004 as they have stated remains to be seen, but Qualcomm best start incorporating EDGE into MSM6xxx or MSM7xxx ASIC roadmaps soon. There is an evolution going on.

Here's the blueprint that the carriers worked out with those previously named vendors.
