Apple Offers Challenge to Microsoft Tablet PC

(2002-11-08) -- Apple, the computer company known for making the complex simple, announced today it will roll out its challenge to the new Microsoft Tablet PC just in time for Christmas.

The new Apple TerraTab is about the same size and shape as the Microsoft machine, but the ads will claim that it never needs batteries, is completely wireless, accepts any kind of handwriting and is so easy a child can use it.

While some critics charge that the new device is little more than a small slate chalkboard, Apple is high on the potential for TerraTab.

"This is a robust technology that is scalable," said one Apple salesman, "and yet anyone who can hold a piece of chalk can begin creating immediately. You don't even need to turn it on. And college students will love the funky white-on-black display."

Apple, which is historically strong in the education market, expects school districts to buy thousands of TerraTabs, since it is "compatible with existing classroom technology."
