c2P0,

EDGE is funny. It's like Ogden Nash's "loving machine".
In EMEA, Asia, and Pac RIM EDGE is 2.5G. It isn't even "an interim step to 3G" like 1xRTT (not 3xRTT) used to be.
In America EDGE is 3G.
Juha Lappalainen could hardly keep a straight face when he showed up for the great 3G debate with Jeff Belk who was touting 1xRTT as 3G and he proacted with 3G EDGE (which combines with WCDMA in the GERAN with multiradio) as well as WCDMA.

What is good for the goose is good for the gander.
Or ...
When in America, do as Americans do ...
How does Nortel refer to EDGE in America?
How does Motorola refer to EDGE in America?
SKT calls 1xRTT 2.5G
China Unicom calls 1xRTT 2.5G
PCS and Verizon call 1xRTT 3G.
AWS, Cingular, and VoiceStream, call EDGE 3G.
Me? I consider EDGE to be 2.5G. If someone wants to want to stretch it to 2.75G ... fine.
EDGE classic (EGPS if you will) is an official ITU standard. It was updated under the IMT-SC umbrella at more or less the same time that 1xEV-DO was upgraded to official IMT-2000 status under the IMT-MC umbrella.
EDGE is capable of exceeding 144 kbps (peak) and maybe even with a real tailwind, the right coding scheme and sufficient time slots, 384 kbps peak,
As Northstream and 3Gamericas put it:
The co-ordinated deployment of GSM/EDGE and WCDMA will be critical to achieving broad market introduction of initial 3G services globally, with EDGE serving as a recognized ITU standard option for “in-band” 3G deployment.
Confusing ain't it.
