Surprise, surprise! And what was the sleeper issue in this year's election?

newsandopinion.com | Abortion was the sleeper issue in this year's election and, contrary to conventional wisdom, it worked to the advantage of pro-life candidates.

A Fox News Opinion Dynamics Election Day poll quizzed voters about issues of primary importance, and as it turns out, abortion was one of the top-rated concerns among voters in key states.

In the Georgia U-S Senate race, for instance, 73 percent of those concerned about abortion voted for Republican Saxbee Chamblis.

The trend was even more pronounced in Minnesota, where former Vice President Walter Mondale accused Republican Norm Coleman of adopting an "arbitrary" opposition to abortion. Coleman replied that his pro-life position was inspired by his first and last-born children, both of whom died in infancy. 81 percent of the abortion-influenced vote went to Coleman.

Jim Talent drew 80 percent of that vote in Misssouri.

So, surprise, surprise! Pro-life voters supplied more than the margin of victory in three key Republican senate victories.
