The primary tactic in war is called "ambush". (The only venue I can think of, where ambush is not the primary tactic, is naval warfare.)

Really? Don't the annals of war also contain a tactic called "siege"? There was also something called "frontal assault with superior force", if I remember correctly. Certainly the element of surprise is very valuable. But you don't have to be a West Point graduate to observe that ambush is not the only tactic in the book.
