..Jews are extremely reluctant to let one of their own marry a non-Jew in the Middle East. And even if such a marriage takes place, their children are ostracized and the non-Jew spouse is never really accepted in the community... Something to do with the continuity and purity of Jewish line. That's true in the US of Orthodox Jews and some Conservative Jews but not Reform Jews, which comprise 2 million of the 5 million American Jews. Reform Judaism believes that by welcoming both partners in a mixed marriage, the more likely it is that the children will be raised as Jews. And since there are only 13 million Jews worldwide, the continuity of Judaism is a concern. As for purity, according to halacha, if your mother is Jewish you are too. mechon-mamre.org
