That's true in the US of Orthodox Jews and some Conservative Jews but not Reform Jews, which comprise 2 million of the 5 million American Jews. Reform Judaism believes that by welcoming both partners in a mixed marriage, the more likely it is that the children will be raised as Jews. And since there are only 13 million Jews worldwide, the continuity of Judaism is a concern. As for purity, according to halacha, if your mother is Jewish you are too.
