Getting kind of OT, but the kind of person the non-Jewish spouse is has nothing to do with it. If the Jewish community is Orthodox, the children of a Jewish father and a non-Jewish mother are not Jewish, period. Therefore, they would not be accepted as Jews unless they underwent full conversion. The children of a Jewish mother and non-Jewish father are Jewish, but yes, it would probably be pretty uncomfortable for a non-Jew in an Orthodox community, as it is a very different way of life. OTOH, I know I'd never fit in with the Southern Baptists of Texas, or the Christian fundamentalists of Alabama, who support that judge with the 2-ton rock of the Ten Commandments in the courthouse. :-/
