What "it" is, is different depending on who the person is looking at "it". Better to say "We all recognized it for what we believed it was...". and of course even better if one can acknowledge that many people here believe different things about "it" and what it was, or is.

Because that would at least approach some semblance of what the truth might be. Your statement appears to presume some objective standard of what happened, and that (considering the evidence to hand, that different people appear to perceive this quite differently) just doesn't work.
