Where we really blew it was in deciding to elect party leaders by a vote of all members of the party, not just the parliamentry caucus. They're elected by all party members? At a party convention? Why?
That cost us the big check on the PM's power. Why so? I would think he would still have to deal with the party leader, regardless of how chosen.
What happened to Maggie Thatcher couldn't happen here, for good or for ill. History lesson: What happened to Margaret Thatcher? (Hey, I can't remember US and British and Canadian and whoever-is-up-next's history.)
Some of those damned tough Canadian soldiers, at Vimy Ridge and Juno Beach, were frogs too. Oh, I understand that. They also had soldiers in those wars. But there are more of you than of them.
Not that I would recommend the American solution. It is costly in lives and treasure and leaves scars for a long, long time. The Civil War cost more American lives (taking American to mean only Union, not including the Confederacy) than all our other wars combined.
Anyway, you guys are still dealing with issues from the civil war after what, 137 years? Had the Union simply let the Confederacy go, we would still be dealing with the consequences too. Maybe worse ones. In the eyes of many Northerners, there was a moral question at the very heart of slavery. Friction and ill will would have continued as long as it did. |
