I love Jack London's short stories, but he was far superior to most writers before or since in that genre. I like Louis L'Amour, but even he's no match for London.

Have you ever read Robert Service's poetry? He describes the northland in verse as well as London did in prose. However, he was an utter failure as a fiction write, in my view. I've been to the cabin where he did some of his writing. It was like a pilgrimage for me.
