DVD manufacturers to beef up regional coding
Ten manufacturers of DVD players have agreed to beef up the regional-coding restrictions built into their machines. The restrictions prevent DVD users from playing software obtained outside their region. Manufacturers have equipped the machines with regional coding in order to address Hollywood's concerns about the impact of the machines on the movie industry. To Hollywood's dismay, a market has sprung up in locations such as Hong Kong for machines that have had the regional-coding restrictions disabled.

The manufacturers have agreed to modify DVD players to prevent consumers and retailers from disabling the coding-restriction mechanisms. Additionally, if the regional-coding restriction is manipulated, it cannot later be switched back to its original format.

Companies such as Toshiba Corp. and Sony Corp. have already begun shipping players with revised semiconductor programming that strengthens the regional-coding mechanism.
