Yes, i mention that upthread ... should be 'Poinsinister' maybe eh -g- ... you folks are not going to have much in the way of civil liberties ... looks like you don't have much now -ng-
Actually, with the way communications are structured (net, telephone switching, etc...), I don't think anyone/anywhere will be immune to the kind of information gathering that will, undoubtedly, be going on.
"And I think to myself, what a wonderful world~~~~" uh...yeah.
BTW, yes, I agree that we need to bump up our armed forces. I don't think there are too many people opposing that. However, just like most Canucks, I think we know what we have to do, and it probably doesn't include buying a bunch of mega-bucks army toy hardware from arms companies. Instead, I think we do need to increase personnel (considerably), place a greater emphasis on high-level skills training for intelligence operations, and select hardware that is in line with the kinds of operations we tend to be constantly involved in -- such as peace-keeping duties, setting up and running emergency hospitals in hostile areas, and (these days) to participate in intelligence operations related to terrorism. Actually, I think we do the "skill acquisitions" part very well (based on what limited knowledge I have of such things -- living where I happen to live, etc..), but it comes down to a question of numbers of trained personnel, and the equipment needed to make them effective. As for participation in "big war" stuff, I don't believe we are in a position to keep up with countries which have massive populations and equally massive tax bases to tap for elaborate military hardware. IMO, ain't gonna happen. |
