I'm still trying to determine what compounds look the most promising as candidates to replace thimerosal.

Why? Not going to be any play here that I can imagine - the replacements are all cheap generic stuff.

Only real investment question I see is whether the existing vaccine manufacturers are going to be successfully attacked by the class-action vultures, and even that's largely a political question now.

Note that thimerosal is not the only potential bad actor in vaccines - there's also gelatin in many vaccines made from bovine sources, leading to potential mad-cow issues.
