Actually, I am 46. I think that we had to be more aggressive, and perhaps would have had to invade the North, but, as you say, that was not going to happen, and Johnson permitted the thing to turn into a war of attrition, which was bound to lose homefront support. I participated in one major protest, at the Washington Monument, during Nixon's second inauguration. Your characterization of many, although not all, of the anti- war people is, unfortunately, apt. Some that I met were quite repellent.
I have known a fair number of people who served in Nam, among them an uncle, mercifully in rear echelon duty in Saigon. Most of them have been good guys, some of them were quite damaged by the experience. I have always hated those who treated young men caught up in the draft and trying to do their duty as if they were criminals.
I am not sure about shooting Fonda, but she probably should have been charged with something, and penalized........ |
