"Choosing to fess up is a riskier and less predictable approach, although the benefits might be greater and more immediate. Or not. If you were to make some unilateral statements of regret and/or self-reflection that enabled people to empathize with you or at least understand you, it might soften others enough to acknowledge some of their own doings"

The reason the focus is on him is BECAUSE his behaviour went so FAR beyond the bounds of the acceptable. It is in the same sense that that Emile guy gets a great deal of flak...BECAUSE he is a threat to society.

Certainly, if CH "came clean"...TRULY CLEAN...he would attract the respect of all decent people. Those who remained churlish toward him would be in the minority and would likely attract a lot of criticism. 99% of the community are not "picking on" CH because they held a secret lottery. They are simply acting as human groups have always acted to preserve culture and value: they are shunning him for behaviour which is contemptuous of everyday standards of respect and decency. If he was no longer contemptuous of the feelings and ideas of others...then he would no longer be a social pariah.
