One of my grandmothers, the one who lived out in the country, kept a double barreled shotgun in her closet. The first chamber was full of rock salt, the second with buckshot.

I don't believe she ever used it except to scare foxes away from her chickens, when she kept chickens.

The nice thing about a handgun, if you live in a concealed carry state (like Virginia) is that you can carry it in your purse or a holster. Not that I have a concealed carry permit myself.

I used to carry a handgun in New Orleans but since Louisiana wasn't a concealed carry state, I'd carry it in my hand when walking from the house to the car and from the car to my place of work, and leave it on the front seat in plain view while I was driving. Perfectly legal but it felt weird to walk around with a gun in my hand in public.

I don't feel like I need to carry a gun here.

When I lived in Louisiana, someone broke into my apartment and tried to rape me once, and I had my purse snatched on the street twice, once by a guy with a knife.

I took the knife away from the attempted rapist by grabbing the blade with my hand and chased him out out the house with it, screaming so loud they heard me two blocks away.

A gun probably wouldn't have done me much good. It was my knife. The guy had one when he came in but mine was bigger so he put his down and used mine.

It was a lucky knife. I had already burned off the tip trying to fix a window air conditioner without unplugging it first. Melted the tip and burned a line on my hand but the handle was wood so it didn't kill me. Old Hickory - a good brand.
