Former defense minister and Labour backbencher Peter Kilfoyle said: "America is duping the world into believing it supports these inspections. President Bush intends to go to war even if inspectors find nothing.

Then maybe they'd better make dang sure the inspection process is thorough enough to be considered credible... if only to do everything possible to deflate any arguments Bush might have for going to war and overthrowing Saddam..

One point about negotiations is that you don't weaken your negotiating stance until you have achieved your goals. Were Perle to state that we would not attack Iraq while UN inspectors were engaged, is to reduce our flexibility.

Additionally, it's to Bush's advantage (and the US) to be perceived as a "cowboy" ala Reagan... Unpredictable, determined, and willing to go it alone unless US interests are "appeased"..

Personally, considering that Iraqi forces continue to fire at US aircraft, and the fact that Hans Blix doesn't have a reputation for competence (given his missing previous WMD stockpiles), the odds are great that Bush will elect to overthrow Saddam anyway.

And you all know that I'm fine with that... Because the real goal must be Saudi Arabia. And Iraq is the keystone to destabilizing the dictatorships in the region and putting the Wahabbis under direct threat.

Besides, we know Saddam has WMDs because we discovered them the first time around and they are still unaccounted for. And if he hasn't declared them by December 8th, we can be positive that he has lied.. and thus violated the terms of the resolution.
