Churchill certainly had no interest in seeing the US get into a war with Japan, and was manipulating the Intel info he was giving Roosevelt,

The British had broken the Japanese Naval code, JN25, whereas the US supposedly had not(see link below). We were both reading the Purple code containing diplomatic traffic, but only Churchill had access to JN25 traffic.

But we'll never really know because any JN25 decrypted traffic prior to Dec 7th, 1941 was obviously "misplaced"..

However, we do know that the the cause was just, the Japanese empire a definite threat, and result a victory...
