Interesting ... there were probably lots of shady characters taking advantage of the situation, with previous law and order having broken down in the hostilities .... banditry is likely a factor in all war, which is another good reason to avoid the state of it
I have a bit of quaker roots, but from way back on the other side of the water .... one of the loyalist roots can't be traced beyond a very vaguely worded letter, in not good condition, names indistinct and what looks like a place name unclear, another place name must have changed since, quite confusing ... i've never done much of the genealogy tracing stuff online, had two relatives who were hyper-active at it before the days of computers ... one paid two thousand quid or so in the early fifties to a London specialist in the field, nice leather bound book but great gaps and much surmising in critical places of the family tree involved .... there was a lucky stroke since then, one distant cousin looked up another, and brought stacks of evidence with which to fill at least one of the gaps .... fascinating subject, it gets difficult when you have multiple countries involved though
Too lazy to type more, but i meant to get deeper into the 'patriot' vs 'tory' terminology, and how it distorts the picture .... also attitudes to law in general, among a heavily armed populace .... see that flic Bowling For Columbine, by all means, it's the modern expression of the same distinction |
