Defeat was not per se inevitable. We repulsed the Tet Offensive, for example. All that was required was a change in strategy, for example, making incursions into North Vietnam to force the NVA to defend the homeland; the earlier bombing of the Ho Chi Minh trail, destroying a necessary logistical lifeline; and attacks on command and control centers in both territories. Opposition at home prevented a more aggressive strategy, and guaranteed that an indecisive war of attrition would finally lose support........
