also don't forget that none of the old guys used steroids. it is much easier to hit homers nowadays thanks to the wonders of modern medical science. unless one takes the position that it was just a coincidence that whereas only 2 people could hit 60 or more homers in a single year through the first 95 years of the 20th century, all of a sudden there was a miraculous group of players that could hit 60 or 70 or more because of their "skill". i suppose one must praise the skill of their doctors.
