When he believed he had Schopenhauer’s position firmly fixed, he returned to Kant, but couldn’t ‘find’ him. Then a dream image came to him: he was asking a secretary for some information. The secretary disregarded him entirely and finally gave him an unfriendly look. It struck Silberer that this hypnagogic dream was a symbol of his unsuccesful efforts to ‘find’ Kant’s argument.
