Separatism : Rene Levesque
or
The Referendum

The legacy of Rene Levesque can be seen in the close results in our last referendum. The Quebec separatist movement is alive and well today in the BLOC Quebecois, a Separatist federal political party. The FLQ and Black October raised a deep understanding of the consequences of violence in the Canadian psyche but did little to diminish the popularity of great champions of Quebec separation like Mr. Levesque. Today the province of Quebec has draconian language laws which have proven to be very effective in halting the advance of English but most Canadians are not threatened by this. French Immersion education, where the school environment is entirely French, is popular in Western Canada, students become bilingual even when their parents aren't.
