NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- The number of bankruptcies filed in the three and 12 months ending Sept. 30 reached record highs, according to the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts. Bankruptcy filings for the three months ended Sept. 30 increased 12% to 401, 306 from a year ago, marking the highest three-month total in U.S. history, the Administrative Office said in a press release Monday.
For the 12 months ended Sept. 30, bankruptcy filings rose 7.7% to 1.55 million from 1.44 million last year, more "than at any time in history."
Non-business bankruptcy filings for the fiscal year rose 7.8% to 1.51 million from 1.4 million, while business filings increased 1.6% to 39,091 from a year ago.
Third-quarter business bankruptcy filings fell 1% to 9,433 from 9,537 last year, while non-business bankruptcy filings for the three months rose 11.9% to 391,873 from 349,981 last year. |
