Do you really think that this is the reason? More likely, the government realizes that the time will come when all of these people on the dole queue will not be able to be supported. Extending the retirement age allows them to reduce transfer payments.

Most people whom I know that are 50+ own their own businesses. They tell me that they wouldn't want to work for someone else, even if they had the chance.

Why should an able-bodied 26-year old receive any government assistance whatsoever? The socialist program has gone unquestioned for too long in Germany if able-bodied people are paid indefinitely for not working.

Didn't Germans used to say, "Mussiggang ist des Teufels Ruhebank"? Come to think of it, my great-grandmother used to say that, and she came to the U.S....
