Hi FL - I have no idea how many bomb incidents there are in any given year. Probably more when we were kids -- I remember cherry bombs and M-80's being flushed down the toilets at high school on a regular basis. My impression is that just about every intelligent boy with access to the right kind of stuff either fantasizes about making a bomb or actually gives it a try. I went to college with one boy who had a bomb blow up in his hand -- it took off part of several fingers! My husband went to college with several people who experimented with explosives. He has a funny story about a guy who made nitrogen tri-iodide, a contact explosive, only to realize that he had it all over his clothes and all over the floor, so that whenever he moved, a tiny explosion went off! I was custodian of the chemical locker in one school - my sister and I had a grand old time throwing sodium into water and stuff like that. I tried to make thermite but thank goodness it didn't work! My husband has a copy of the Anarchist's cookbook but I don't think he ever tried making anything in it. Nick (the science minded son) says that the recipes are said to actually not work. He's one of the ones who might try making things but we've told him all the horror stories so hopefully he won't.
