Jailing journalists: The cases I am familiar with involve serious criminal matters in which the journalist has information the police need.
May I point out that Daniel Ellsberg, the leaker of the Pentagon Papers, spent not one day in jail? That a motion by the gov't to exercise prior restraint on the press in the matter was overruled by the courts? And American courts have consistently held that viewpoint?
That they would never have seen the light of day in Britain because of the Official Secrets Act? Is it on your list of dictatorships also?
That Woodward and Bernstein, who brought down a President, did no jail time?

I am saying that in a military alliance, if one nation is significantly more powerful than the rest, it will be the leader of that alliance.
Leaders should lead, if a leader glances behind and sees no one else following, that is pretty good evidence that no leading is occurring, regardless of claims to the contrary.

American hawks have trouble seeing that leading the charge is different than rushing the enemy alone.
Oh, I think they are quite well aware of that distinction. And have said they will in fact go it alone if necessary.
I do not like the fact that the US may have to launch another ME war on its own either. I'm not particularly enthusiastic to get into it. If it's just Iraq we face, it should be over quickly. If other Arab nations get into it or if a large scale jihad breaks out, it could be an unholy mess.
OTOH, your alternative is to leave Saddam in power- -with a real possibility he will soon have really serious weaponry- -nukes. Is that your preference? |
