From my viewpoint, the Quebec question is something Canadians have to settle themselves. It's not that we have no interests in the outcome, but it is not our country or our business. If separation does come, hopefully it will be peaceful; if not, I expect the US would get large numbers of Canadian refugees and also some of the violence would spill over here. And the US is clearly better off with a single peaceful neighbor to its north than with two that are at each others' throats.

draconian language laws
What language is used in Quebec's public schools? Both? Equally?
Does Quebec follow the current Canadian custom of dual-language signage, etc?

be very effective in halting the advance of English
