Unisys ES7000 Tops all Windows-based Servers in Two-Tier SAP Standard Application Benchmark

BLUE BELL, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 18, 2002--

ES7000 16-way Beats Nearest Competition by 250% With Intel Itanium 2, Windows .NET Server 2003 Datacenter Edition, and SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition (64-bit)

The Unisys ES7000 beat the best recorded performance of all Microsoft- and Intel-based servers ever tested under the SAP Standard Application Sales and Distribution (SD) Benchmark for "two-tiered" configurations -- those running the application and the database on the same server. The Unisys ES7000 topped its nearest Windows-based competitor, an IBM x440 supporting 520 SAP SD Benchmark users, by over
250%.(1)

The result is the best two-tiered configuration performance ever achieved by a server -- Unix or Windows -- with fewer than 24 processors. For enterprises relying on large-scale SAP solutions, the test shows the ability of the Unisys ES7000, combined with Microsoft and Intel technology, to outperform larger and more expensive Unix/ RISC- based servers.

Equipped with 16 Intel Itanium 2 processors, the 64-bit Unisys ES7000 Aries 130 server supported 1,340 concurrent SAP Standard Application SD users, the best performance ever delivered by a non-clustered server using Intel Itanium 2 processors. It ran the Windows .NET Server 2003 Datacenter Edition operating system and SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition (64-bit) database. The benchmark, an
industry-standard measure of server performance, was conducted at the Unisys performance laboratory in Mission Viejo, Calif, and has been certified by SAP AG.

"These outstanding results surprised even our engineers," said Mike Thomas, vice president of Unisys Global Solution Partners Program. "Seeing a 16-way Unisys ES7000 triumph over Unix/RISC servers with 50 percent more processors is truly satisfying. This achievement validates our ability to deliver clear value to our clients by lowering IT infrastructure costs while increasing capabilities through our mainframe-class technology."

The SAP Standard Application SD Benchmark simulates the maximum number of concurrent users supported by a system within response times of less than two seconds. The simulated user workload was achieved with an average dialog response time of 1.84 seconds and is equivalent to 135,670 fully business processed order line items per hour. The
results were derived using the SAP Standard Application SD Benchmark methodology, an industry standard measurement. More information on the benchmark is available at www.sap.com/benchmark or upon request from Unisys and SAP AG.

"This benchmark clearly shows the performance gains that customers can expect with Windows .NET Server 2003 Datacenter Edition and SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition," said Bob Ellsworth, director, Windows Server Division, Microsoft Corp. "Impressive results like this on a server running both the application and the database prove that
businesses can consolidate resources without sacrificing performance."

The Unisys ES7000 Aries 130 was configured with 16 Intel Itanium 2 1.0-GHz processors with 3 Mbytes of level-three cache and 64 GB of main memory. The server ran Microsoft Corp.'s Windows .NET Server 2003 Datacenter Edition operating system, Microsoft SQL Server 2000
Enterprise Edition (64-bit) database, and SAP R/3 Release 4.6C. CPU utilization on the central server was 96%. Total disk space was 1.15 Tbytes.

Unisys has been a certified SAP Platform Partner and certified SAP Software Partner since 1997. Unisys operates competency centers in Sulzbach, Germany, and McLean, Virginia, dedicated to sizing and tuning SAP applications for peak performance on ES7000 server platforms.

(1) IBM achieved 520 SAP Benchmark users with 1.85 average dialog response time and 158,000 fully processed line items per hour. This was achieved on the IBM eServer xSeries Model 440 running Windows 2000, DB2 UDB 7.2 and SAP R/3 Release 4.6C. The configuration utilized the 8-way SMP, Pentium Xeon processor at 1.6 GHz with 1 MB of L3 cache, March 11, 2002.
