ESI Receives Order from Innochips for Additional Electronic Component Systems

Businesswire, Thursday, November 21, 2002 at 09:02

PORTLAND, Ore., Nov 21, 2002 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Electro Scientific Industries, Inc. (Nasdaq:ESIO) announced today an order for Electronic Component Systems equipment from Innochips Technology, Inc., a leading circuit design service company.

The systems will ship during ESI's second fiscal quarter, ending on November 30, 2002, to Shiheung, Korea, where Innochips has an installed base of ESI systems for the production of varistors."As we have expanded, we depend on ESI to provide innovative technology,"said Kim Duk-Hee, Ph.D, General Manager of Innochips."ESI has supplied a full range of varistor test systems, including the best and most cost-effective visual test solution available."RETURN RETURN"While demand for MLCC production equipment remains subdued, varistors are an emerging market, representing double digit growth in the components sector,"said Keith Taft, vice president of ESI's electronic component production equipment business."Circuit protection is increasingly critical, especially with the complexity of advanced devices in next generation mobile phones. Varistors excel at protecting ICs from voltage surges and offer a better price/performance ratio over previously used devices."Innochips' order includes a Model 6650A visual test system for varistor chips. ESI visual test systems use structured LED lighting and three images of each side of the component for high-speed automatic detection of two- and three-dimensional defects. With a throughput of up to 65,000 parts per hour, ESI visual test systems eliminate the need for manual inspection. Innochips also ordered a Model 3330X high-speed electrical test system for varistor chips, with the capacity to test up to 75,000 components per hour.

Statements in this press release may include forward looking statements that involve a number of risks and uncertainties that could cause actual results to materially differ, either better or worse, from those discussed, including volatility in the electronic equipment market and the company's ability to meet production schedules. Such risks and uncertainties are numerous and are identified in the Company's Annual Report on Form 10-K and interim reports on Form 10-Q.
