After she finds out they are dead, she basically says (to her children) that she has no idea whether any of the Catholic stuff about the afterlife is true. Seemed like an assault on the True Church to me- not that I care, except as a point of interest, but it was certainly there. You also infer that the woman is a religious nut from the rest of the movie. And of course this religious nut kills her children.
