Green Mountain Wind Farm Celebrates One Year Anniversary

greenmountain.com

Over 70 national and international wind energy experts from American Wind Energy Association will tour Green Mountain Wind Farm in Garrett, PA, Friday June 8 at 12 noon.

GARRETT, PA - June 7, 2001 - One year ago this month, thanks to the tens of thousands of Pennsylvanians who made the choice for cleaner electricity, eight 200 foot wind turbines arrived in Garrett, the home of the Green Mountain Wind Farm. Hailed as one of the largest wind farms on the East Coast and the first utility scale wind farm in the state, the Green Mountain Wind Farm represents how the power of consumer demand can help change the way power is made.

To celebrate this incredible accomplishment for Pennsylvania, and the one year anniversary of the wind farm, Green Mountain Energy Company will host a reception and tour on Friday, June 8, 2001 beginning at Noon for a group of 70 national and international wind power experts from American Wind Energy Association (AWEA), along with New Jersey high school seniors who have used their prize money from a sustainable energy essay contest to fund their trip to the Green Mountain Wind Farm.

The success of the Green Mountain Wind Farm has attracted attention both nationally and internationally and has spurred the development of additional wind projects in Pennsylvania, helping promote the choice for cleaner air through less polluting electricity.

"The winds of change are blowing through Pennsylvania's electricity industry. It's a change in the way power is made and used," said Clifton Payne, President, Eastern Region, Green Mountain Energy Company. "Green Mountain Energy Company is proud to be a leader in spurring the demand for renewable energy that is helping to bring about new wind power projects in the state."

The Green Mountain Wind Farm is a 10,400 kilowatt (kW) project that can produce as much as 25 million kilowatt hours (kWh) each year, or enough to serve the average needs of approximately 2,400 Pennsylvania homes. The wind farm is located on private farmland that was once used for coal strip mining in Summit Township and Garrett, and attracts over 70,000 visitors each year. A permanent "welcome center" has been erected on a corner of the farm that provides a convenient vantage point for viewing the wind turbines. The Green Mountain Wind Farm is owned and operated by National Wind Power, the UK's leading wind power developer. The giant turbines, towers and blades were manufactured by Nordex GmbH in Denmark.
