Where are you going with this? The stock market gets played in 2 directions, long or short. The point is to profit on your position, so technically, YES, it is ok to profit from any situation no matter how terrible. If you were buying gold because you thought the stock market was over priced and the US dollar's valuation was excessive, but you happened to benefit from some horrible disaster like 9-11, WOULD YOU GIVE YOUR MONEY BACK? Why not do something charitable with your gains or assist someone who suffered during the disaster, instead of beating yourself up because you happened to be on the right side of the trade when the bad news came out?

You are coming across like you feel anyone who shorts a stock is some sort of ogre!?!
