There isn't a lot of anti-Louis XIV sentiment in France. Napoleon eventually lost the French empire by mis-managing his wars, and allowing the rest of Europe to unite against him. He should have just retired around 1809. But much of what his rule left to France survived, and is still considered by them to be enlightened. The American Founders, who were still alive back then, also considered Napoleon an enlightened friend. The War of 1812 was collateral damage from that attitude. Fortunately, the US was still a very remote corner of the world, and survived the fall of Napoleon-with the big prize, Louisiana Territory, still in our possession...
