There are any number of successful novels with no true villains, even though there is conflict, or where the villains are so remote they may as well be impersonal forces, such as Tom Sawyer (Injun Joe is practically a nullity as a character, mere menace); Anna Karenina has no villain, though it has deeply flawed characters; The Magic Mountain has no villain at all; Main Street (Sinclair Lewis) has no villains, just people with foibles; The Chosen has no villain, just a conflict between a father and son; and so on. The Nazis in The Sound of Music may as well be an impersonal force. And in Stephen King, most of the monsters are about as personlity- less as impersonal forces....
