Regarding the southern US, some years ago in Tucson I picked up the delightful book "Chulo - A Year Among the Coatimundi" by Bil Gilbert. It's currently out of print, but I see that the U of AZ press has reprinted it several time.

It's about a naturalist studying coatis in the Huachuca Mts on the Arizona border. I later visited the study site in the Coronado National Monument, and recall looking out over the deserted border with Mexico. At the time I wondered why there weren't more people trying to cross over illegally. I guess they figured it out.
