My secret weapon for good spelling is google. I put the word into google the way I think it should be spelled, and google suggests the correct spelling.

I do the homonym/homophone thing, too (their/there), and struggle with possessives (its/it's).

I keep a copy of Strunk & White's Manual of Style on my desk, for the finer points of when to use that vs. which and who vs. whom.

I think everyone who strives for proper use of language has these problems, otherwise there would not be manuals of style.

There may be a few Olympians who never err, but there are far more Yahoos who don't realize their errors or simply don't care.

BTW, it appears to me that the difference between homonym and homophone is that homophones always have different spellings as well as different meanings, but homonyms sometimes have the same spelling but alway different meanings. Thus, when two words which sound alike have both a different meaning and a different spelling, they are both homonyms and homophones.
