Quite a different thing, really.

There is/was a recipe on boxes of Minute Rice for something called "breakfast rice." It was rice cooked with raisins in milk. Faux rice pudding. No eggs, not a firm pudding, etc. Ergo, faux rice pudding. Ergo, faux bread pudding. The simple, watered down breakfast treatment for a standard desert is what makes it "faux."
