Unknown Palestinian group claims responsibility for Kenyan attacks

The Associated Press
Nov. 28, 2002

BEIRUT, Lebanon - A previously unknown Palestinian militant group claimed responsibility for Thursday's attacks in Kenya that killed 11 people.

The group - describing itself as The Government of Universal Palestine in Exile, The Army of Palestine – said in a statement faxed to international press agencies in Beirut that two units carried out an attack in Kenya on the eve of the 55th anniversary of the 1947 decision to partition Palestine - a move that led to the creation of the state of Israel.

The statement did not specify either of Thursday's attacks - one on an Israeli-owned hotel in Kikambala, 15 miles (24 kilometers) north of Mombasa, that left eight people and three suicide bombers dead, and the firing of two missiles two missiles at a jetliner owned by the Arkia Airlines charter company as it left the Mombasa airport bound for Tel Aviv, Israel.

The statement said its two units were sent to "Kenya to strike at Israeli interests."

It was not immediately possible to verify the statement's authenticity.

Khaled Aref, a senior commander of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's Fatah group in Lebanon, expressed surprise at the claim and said he had not heard of the group before.

Another Palestinian militant commander said he has not heard of the group.
