Elmat's CDMA network: `Hutch' mobile launch imminent

bangkokpost.com

``Hutch'' will be the brand name of the CDMA mobile-phone service to be operated by Hutchison CAT Wireless Multimedia, a joint venture of Hong Kong-based Hutchison and the Communications Authority of Thailand.

A CAT source said the Hutch service would have a soft launch on Jan 10 with full commercial service to start in the third quarter next year.

Hutchison CAT Wireless Multimedia holds rights from the CAT to market the service in Bangkok and 22 central provinces. But the source said its handsets could be used nationwide because the CAT had networks in major cities in the provinces.

The service will use CDMA 20001X technology, which is capable of handling new non-voice applications.

The CDMA network also represents a lower construction cost than that of the GSM system, as one CDMA base station has coverage equivalent to that of six GSM stations.

<<This is the network that I have been helping build since April 2002. Hutchison has not put all its eggs on a signle basket W-CDMA European flavor>>
