Actually, Carl, you are correct. "Nearly the same" is a better definition for synonym, and homonym includes words that homophone may not, i.e., words that are spelled the same but pronounced differently, although there are relatively few such. This occurred to me after I signed off, but I did not feel any urgency in correcting it, since the main point, which is that I used the term correctly, had been made. Still, I think you are right to offer clarification. I apologize to Karen if I were too abrupt. Thanks........
