Both ALTR and XLNX are ramping up production of FPGAs built with 0.13u and 0.15u, respectively. In the current environment, cumulative sales are running at very high rates. These FPGAs are used in a wide array of "advanced" products in communications and consumer products. These ramps drive output at TSMC and UMC and require additional capacity. The technology is invented, Moore's Law is making it more powerful, and R & D develops its capability and new applications. The "when" is now, in 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, one year. The leading semi-equips are selling lots of equipment. Not at 2000 bubble levels, but not as far below as the current malaise might have you think. These sales are almost all for new technology.

FPGAs are my favorite, but there are other similar examples in most other classes of chips.
