A few preferred stocks which are especially worth looking at -- unless I missed something --

The FR-D and FR-E are callable 2/4/03 and 3/18/03 and are selling below par. If they get called at $25, that's a fine yield. Until then, they pay 8%.

PPS-b looks to be 8.8% yield to redemption. They cut the dividend on the common and the preferred jumped a on that fine news. Priced at $24 now. Redemption 10/28/07. Last time I checked, Moodys was Baa2. But I'm not sure if that was the debt or the preferred.

Maa_B could be called in a few weeks. Selling at $24.6 -- a 1.6% discount.

I have been concentrating on REIT preferred. They seem to have a higher yield than banks and others. And I get some comfort from the high level of common dividends which shield the preferred. Also REIT's with a low payout ratio offer nice protection.

Perhaps a good topic for discussion would be a tutorial/agreement on yield calculations, and other basics.

Sure would be nice to have a preferred stock screener... I still haven't gone thru all the preferred lists on-line. A tedious process, one at a time, checking this and checking that. I own 15-20 preferred stocks at present, and I occasionally look for more. Maybe now, I'll sit down and do the work.

more later,
regards,

Grommit
