W-CDMA will arrive in South Korea next June courtesy of KT ICOM, KT Corp’s 3G subsidiary.

KT ICOM spokesman Choi Il Yong told the ITU TELECOM ASIA Show Daily that the operator is currently trialing a W-CDMA network in Seoul with equipment from LG Electronics.

The trial consists of a single base station with network coverage spanning an area of 1 kilometer in metropolitan Seoul, Choi said.

Choi said commercial W-CDMA service would start in June 2003 in Seoul, and then expand to the rest of the country.

KT ICOM is betting on a series of multimedia services to drive adoption of W-CDMA.

“The killer application for W-CDMA is video telephony,” Choi said. “CDMA 1x cannot do this.”

Choi also highlighted video-based multimedia messaging and video-on-demand as services being prepared for the W-CDMA launch.

KT ICOM is demonstrating the services with a LGE handset at this year’s ITU TELECOM ASIA 2002. Sources said that LGE’s main rival, Samsung Electronics, failed to deliver a working W-CDMA handset to KT ICOM in time for the event.

KT ICOM also unveiled the official brand for its W-CDMA service – G3 (or Gcube), meaning “Global Gateway for next Generation”.

Rival cellco SK Telecom said earlier that its W-CDMA unit, SKT IMT, would launch its service before the end of 2003.
