I once had a chance to respond to an emminent economist lester something or other who was belowing out that the US had lost it's edge and proof was all those VCR's where not a dime was made by American companies.

His argument was carrying the day in all the press but in fact his argument was pure crap and in a short period of time proof was on the table.

You see a VCR or a TV or a dvd is not an end in itself it's but a low margin small profit on the production; means to some end.

I further calculated that for every VCR sold hundreds maybe thousands of tapes were rented and played through them, breaking it out I made a case easily that demonstrated that Profits along a trajectory of the life of Every VCR
fell mostly to the Government who collected sales taxes on each and every component, rental, accessory or repair made in that machines life.

Bids busted.
