I'm not sure what you find sickening. Yes a major war or a whole bunch of minor ones at the same time would result in a lot of death and destruction and maybe that is what you are calling sickening but it seems rather that you find being prepared for the possibility of such things happening to be sickening.

As for what wonders could be reaped by diverting these funds to peaceful use, well our military spending as a percentage of GDP has halfed from the peak of the Reagan years. So the "wonders" if we eliminated the rest would be similar to what we got from the "peace dividend" so far. Of course the horrors that might happen if the US had no military would probably be worse.
