If you had shorted the first close at 83 BPNDX in April 2001, you'd have shorted the COMP at 2079. The COMP dropped to 2000 5-sessions later before rebounding to 2328 a little more than a month later.

You'd have shorted 10% too soon.

That's why the absolute values of the BPNDX are not relevant and the 13-EMA and 20-EMA cross-overs are.
